Safe Handling Practices:
- Always treat every firearm as if it is loaded.

- Never put your finger on the trigger or inside the trigger guard until you are aimed at the target and have decided to shoot.
- Always be sure of your target and what is behind and around it.
- Handle firearms only while sober and clear-minded.
- You are responsible for knowing how to safely operate, load, unload and store your firearm as well as the termination point of every bullet fired.
Knowledge and Training:
- Obtain training in firearm use. You can sign up for our gun safety class here: https://www.colliersheriff.org/how-do-i/gun-safety
- Become familiar with the essential parts of your handgun.
- Read and follow the instructions in your weapon’s owner’s manual, ammunition boxes and any related accessories.
Equipment and Maintenance:
- Use only the correct ammunition for your firearm.
- Buy ammunition suited to your purpose, whether for target or defensive shooting.
- Keep ammunition stored in a cool dry place.
- Inspect and maintain your equipment regularly.
Storage and Security:
Safe and responsible gun ownership requires proper security and storage. Secure your weapon away from children and other unauthorized people. An untrained, careless or irresponsible person can turn your firearm into a deadly hazard.
To properly store and secure a firearm, gun owners should do the following:
- Unload the firearm, including clearing the chambered round.
- Place the firearm in a locked cabinet, gun safe or other securable location.
- Keep ammunition safely stored, preferably in a fireproof storage container.
- Use gun locking devices to make firing the weapon impossible. To obtain free gun locks from CCSO email prevention@colliersheriff.org or call 239-252-0700.
- Keep firearms out of the hands of children who may not understand the consequences of handling a firearm.
- Never store a firearm in your dresser drawer, atop a high area or under your pillow.
- Always store firearms using locks, lock boxes or gun safes.
- Take extra caution if you live in a home with children, people with substance abuse issues or those with mental illness.
