CCSO: Beware Of Jury Duty Scam

The phone rings and someone on the other end says you missed jury duty and now you have to pay upFraudAlert.

Don’t believe it; it’s a scam.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports in recent days from residents who said they received a suspicious telephone call from someone claiming to be “Lt. Handy” or other names from CCSO. The caller tells them they missed jury duty at the Collier County courthouse.

In most of these calls, the caller asked the person to mail thousands of dollars in fines. The caller may know personal information about you, show a number on the caller ID that appears legitimate, and have plausible information.  Do not fall for their scam!

CCSO encourages residents who receive such a call to immediately hang up the phone, not provide any information to the caller, and do not send money.

This scam can take on many forms to include people impersonating the IRS, your bank, utilities, and many other legitimate organizations. CCSO advises anyone who receives a call requesting money or personal information not to provide that information over the phone. Instead, hang up. If you think that the caller may have been the real organization, look up the legitimate number and then call it to verify the information you received over the phone.

Deputies would also like to remind residents that members of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office will never contact you by telephone about missing jury duty. Deputies will never threaten you with fines or arrest for missing jury duty.

You may report fraudulent phone calls like this to the Federal Trade Commission at www.FTC.Gov. For assistance with any suspicious encounter involving a request for money or personal information, contact the Collier County Sheriff’s Office’s Call Before You “Pay” hotline at (239) 252-CALL (2255).
