A 36-year-old Golden Gate Estates man was arrested Tuesday after detectives say he fired a bullet into a neighboring residence while shooting a pistol in his backyard in May.

William Charles Molloy III, 3323 62nd Ave. N.E., was charged with discharging a firearm in public or on residential property, a misdemeanor.

Around 4:30 p.m. May 21, deputies responded to a residence in the 3300 block of 64th Avenue Northeast after a neighbor found a bullet hole in the rear master bedroom and a bullet fragment on the bathroom floor, according to detectives.

Detectives said three people were inside the residence at the time of the incident.

Further investigation by detectives revealed Molloy came home for lunch and fired a few rounds from his .40-caliber Springfield Armory pistol into two dirt berms in his backyard. The residence that was struck was located a distance behind one of the berms.

Detectives submitted a warrant request to prosecutors. The warrant was approved Monday, Oct. 2. Detectives made contact with Molloy on Tuesday morning and placed him under arrest.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office reminds the community that firing a weapon in a yard is a violation of the law if it is done negligently or recklessly.
