Tell us your texting while driving story:

My son was killed by a texting driver in May 2008. I will be retiring at the end of this year. I had considered retiring to Florida, but I can not live in, or even visit, a state that allows texting and driving.

I was with Rescue here in Australia, part of my job was dealing with Road Crash Rescue. If you use a mobile for any reason while driving, you are an idiot, this should be illegal anywhere while you are behind the wheel. Here in Australia, if you are caught, you are hit with a hefty fine then you lose 3 points off your licence. This is getting as bad as drink driving and speeding. It's about time the law started getting tougher on people using a mobile while driving

- Garry Cole, Warner, Australia

To honor the lives lost and the families forever grieving we must put an end to the senseless tragedy of distracted driving. In Florida, the United States, or anywhere that still allows texting and driving by failing to specifically outlaw it.

A family member was killed by a 17-year-old who was texting as he rounded a curve. My family member had no time to avoid collision, he died! The texter... he's alive still and his life goes on.

My father was killed by his 19-year-old neighbor while on a walk. She didn't see him because she was texting while driving.

 - Christina Yanssens, Columbiana, OH

I drive for a living and get to see people of all ages swerving on the road because they are texting. They are a real danger to themselves, others, and a reason for insurance rates soaring.

To prevent future tragedy. If I were to ever lose my child via a texting while driving incident, I would never be the same. Please think of the other people, Not just yourself.

I was stopped at the signal at Airport and Pine Ridge last year and I saw a person coming up behind me at probably 40 miles per hour unaware that the light was red. I could see in my rear-view mirror that he was texting.

I braced myself to be rear-ended and yelled to my two children to hold on tight, certain that we were little more than a second or two from being hit. Miraculously, at the last second the other driver looked up and saw us and SLAMMED on his brakes. All I could hear was the sound of screeching tires. We were so, so lucky.

I was never one to use my cell phone in the car very much anyway, but since that day I leave it in my purse while I'm driving and don't pick it up until we are safely parked.

I have witnessed many poor driving habits over the last 20 years during my commute to Fort Myers and then North Naples. By far texting drivers scare me when I see them. We multitask enough just driving and adding texting to the task driving becomes Russian Roulete.

The safety of my family and ALL other persons using the roadways. Have had several near misses already due to others texting.

I live in North Fort Myers and am 79-years-old. I ride my 3 wheel bike to Weavers Corner, to the Gym, usually 5 days a week. While its mostly sidewalks via the 2.5 mile ride (5 miles round trip) I cross over a dozen feeder streets in and out from Bayshore Road. And here's the problem.

Young drivers wheel off Bayshore Road into one of the side streets. They are one hand on the wheel and one on the cell phone. They cross over three lanes of traffic. I have to be very viligant crossing over these side streets, as I watch these young drivers, driving one handed, it would only take something in the road, an animal or a ususpecting person, or biker to get hit. I have had some close calls.

There are clearly not in control of their automobile. For their own protection and those who use the side walks and across over the feeder streets we need to stop texting while driving.

You statics on texting accidents are staggering and I applaude you for leading the charge. Its time to outlaw this dangerous practice.

Distracted driving took the life of my 19-year-old daughter.

She was walking across the street and a 19-year-old boy talking on his cell phone while driving hit her and her friend. He kept driving because he didnt know he hit anyone.

She died 5 days later from her injuries, which consisted of a traumatic brain injury, a broken neck and broken pelvis. She was in a coma for 5 days before she died. My daughter's death could have been prevented.
