Fireworks Safety

The Collier County Sheriff's Office urges residents and visitors to put safety first when celebrating holidays like the Fourth of July where fireworks may be involved.

An illegal firework is basically anything that leaves the ground or goes bang.

Sales at permitted fireworks stands are limited only to legal fireworks which are on the Florida Division of State Fire Marshal's approved sparkler list.

The best way to stay safe is to avoid using fireworks and attend a professionally staged display.
If you decide to use sparklers as part of your Fourth of July holiday celebrations, keep these tips in mind:

. Read and follow label directions
. Always have an adult present
. Buy from a reliable seller
. Only use fireworks outdoors
. Always have a water hose and bucket nearby
. Never experiment or alter fireworks from their original packaging
. Ignite only one firework at a time
. Never give fireworks to small children
. Keep a safe distance
. Never point or throw fireworks at another person
. Never attempt to relight or "fix" fireworks
. Do not wear loose or fitting clothes while lighting fireworks
. Stay away from illegal or homemade fireworks
. Never carry fireworks in your pocket
. Dispose of fireworks by soaking them in water first, then into a trash can
. Store fireworks in a cool, dry location
. Never use fireworks near dry grass or flammable materials
